Masa brings a wealth of experience in corporate strategy, internationalization, private equity, investment banking and startups across diverse industries. Masa’s expertise lies in strategic growth and operational transformation, having advised and invested in numerous international corporations and startups.
Masa holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a BA in Social Sciences from International Christian University in Tokyo. He also studied Industrial Management at Carnegie Mellon University, enriching his cross-disciplinary expertise in business and strategy.
Masa began his career in investment banking and private equity at Merrill Lynch and The Carlyle Group. He later co-founded VARECS Partners, an engagement fund in Tokyo with the mission, “Value Realization through Creating Solutions.” His strategic insights and leadership led to impactful roles, such as his work with Japan Airlines, where he served as a trustee for the government’s Enterprise Turnaround Initiative Corporation (now REVIC), aiding in major corporate recoveries.
Since relocating to New York City in 2018, Masa has actively invested in and mentored over twenty startups, spanning industries from fintech to DNA data services. His passion for entrepreneurship and innovation fuels his hands-on approach with emerging companies.
In addition to being the fractional COO of a biotech startup startup, Bound Therapeutics, Masa advises primarily mid-sized companies in the US and Japan on corporate strategy and M&A. Until recently, he served as Corporate Strategy Director for Juzen Chemical, a pharmaceutical CDMO in Japan; International Business Advisor to Hokuetsu Kogyo, a Tokyo Stock Exchange-listed industrial equipment firm; and Global Partnerships Director at Electromec Material Handling Systems in India.
